    The problem

Polling did not get unlucky. It got structurally unsound.

Contact collapsed, opt-in panels filled the gap, verification never arrived, and statistical modelling was asked to repair samples nobody could inspect. The misses you remember are symptoms of that chain — not a run of bad cycles.

Start with the number that moved

The foundation of survey research quietly gave way

Probability sampling assumed you could reach a broad cross-section of people and that most would answer. One of those assumptions is gone. Everything the industry built on top of it — panels, weighting, likely-voter models — is downstream of this single line.

When 94 out of 100 contacts decline, the published result is driven less by who was sampled than by the assumptions used to stand in for everyone who said no.

    The public record

Three findings, and the limits of each

These are external, citable findings — not our measurements. Each is paired with what it does not establish, because a diagnosis that overstates its evidence is the same failure mode being described.

    • Telephone response rates fell from 36% to 6% over roughly two decades, so a modern sample is assembled from a very small, self-selecting slice of everyone contacted.

SourcePew Research Center, response rates in telephone surveys, 1997–2018

Does not showThat low response automatically produces a wrong answer. It shows the result now depends far more on modelling assumptions than on who happened to pick up.

    • Testing of opt-in online samples found a measurable share of bogus respondents — people or scripts producing answers that fail basic authenticity checks.

SourcePew Research Center, assessing the risks to online polls from bogus respondents, 2020

Does not showThat every online panel is compromised, or the exact prevalence in any specific vendor's sample. It shows unverified participation is an open door.

    • The industry's own post-mortem on 2020 pre-election polling identified error at the high end of recent cycles, concentrated in who agreed to participate rather than in question wording.

SourceAAPOR Task Force on 2020 Pre-Election Polling, final report, 2021

Does not showA single agreed cause, or that the cause has been eliminated since. It shows the failure is structural, not a one-off miss.

Figures are reproduced from the cited public reports for the periods stated. PolitiMind does not restate them as its own findings, and none of them establish that any specific published poll was wrong.

    How the failure actually propagates

    1. 01

      Contact collapses

Almost everyone contacted declines, so the pool of willing respondents is small and unusual.

    2. 02

      Cheap substitution

The gap is filled with opt-in panels recruited by incentive rather than by design.

    3. 03

      Unverified participation

Without identity assurance, duplicate, ineligible, and automated respondents can enter the sample.

    4. 04

      Modelling absorbs the damage

Weighting is asked to repair a sample it cannot see the flaws in.

    5. 05

      The result is unauditable

The number publishes without a record anyone outside the vendor can reconstruct or check.

    The common misdiagnosis

This is not a question-wording problem, and better statistics cannot reach it

The reflex response is methodological tinkering: new weighting targets, new likely-voter screens, larger samples. Those are real skills, and they help at the margin. They cannot fix an input problem. Weighting adjusts for imbalance on variables you captured; it cannot recover people who never participated on dimensions nobody measured, and it cannot recognise a respondent who should never have been in the file.

Which means the repair has to happen earlier — at who is allowed to answer, at what was actually asked, and at whether the published record can be checked afterwards.

    What would have to change

Fix the inputs and the record, not the arithmetic

The left column is the structural default of the category as it operates today — not one vendor. The right column is what PolitiMind changes about the inputs and the record, at the readiness stated below.

How it was computedWeighting described in prose, in a footnote, without a version an outsider can pin down.Computation runs as a recorded run against a registered, versioned method.
Whether the number changedNo mechanism to detect post-publication revision of the underlying record.A commitment to the published record makes later alteration detectable (beta, testnet-stage).
TurnaroundWeeks of fielding and processing, so the finding lands after the decision it should inform.Continuous fielding against a verified audience, with results assembled as responses arrive.
What the buyer can checkThe vendor's summary. Raw provenance stays inside the vendor.Published results carry specification, sample context, and methodology with them.

Comparison describes the structural default of conventional research, not any named competitor. Tamper-evidence is a beta, testnet-stage capability.

What we claim about this, and what we do not

    • Participation requires identity verification, so responses come from confirmed real people rather than anonymous traffic.
    • Participant identity and response data are held separately, so buyers receive population-level intelligence and never participant identities.
    • Published results carry provenance: the specification, method version, and computation run behind a number are recorded and inspectable.
    • Methodology is stated in plain language — sampling frame, weighting approach, margin of error, and known limitations travel with every result.
    • Every study runs behind integrity controls that detect duplicate, coordinated, and low-quality participation before results are published.
    • Beta
Result commitments are anchored to a public ledger so the record is tamper-evident after publication.

Verification, provenance, and methodology controls reduce specific, named failure modes — fraudulent or ineligible participation, silently edited instruments, unrecorded computation, undetectable post-publication change. They do not eliminate sampling error, nonresponse bias, or measurement error, and no survey method does. PolitiMind results carry uncertainty and stated limitations; where a capability is beta or testnet-stage, it is labelled as such rather than described as proof.

    What backs this up

Participation requires identity verification, so responses come from confirmed real people rather than anonymous traffic.

    How verification works

Published results carry provenance: the specification, method version, and computation run behind a number are recorded and inspectable.

    Why it matters to you

The cost is not an embarrassing headline — it is a decision made on a number nobody can defend

Campaigns allocate budget, newsrooms publish, boards approve strategy, and institutions set policy against these numbers. When the finding is challenged and no one can reconstruct how it was produced, the argument stops being about the evidence and becomes about credibility.

A verified audience and a reconstructible record do not make you right. They make you defensible, and they make the uncertainty explicit rather than hidden.
